Washington, D.C., December  15, 2003

An EADS-supported television special has provided a retrospective on how the world changed during the first century of powered flight, and examined what the next 100 years may bring as a result of future advances in aviation.

EADS North America Chairman Ralph Crosby underscored the contributions that international pioneers, designers, engineers and visionaries have made to the advances in aviation.

Developed and produced by CNBC International, the one-hour documentary’s broadcast on December 14 was made as celebrations marking the centennial of flight reached their peak in the U.S. and abroad.

“The Power of Flight” featured interviews with aviators and historians, along with discussions on the aerospace industry’s current status and prospects for the future. It included photos and video from private archives on such aerospace industry pioneers as Bleriot of France and Germany’s Dornier, Junkers, Messerschmitt, and Heinkel.

At a December 9 VIP pre-screening in Washington, D.C., EADS North America Chairman Ralph Crosby underscored the contributions that international pioneers, designers, engineers and visionaries have made to the advances in aviation.

“Flight is a passion and a business shared by many, and is one that historically transcends borders and nationalities,” Crosby said. “Before the Wright Brothers made their first successful powered hop in the U.S., Otto Lilienthal was using gliders in Germany to understand the basics of flight. Well before the Spirit of St. Louis’ transatlantic crossing, there was Louis Bleriot, who made a pioneering trip across the smaller body of water – the English Channel. And for every Robert Goddard, there was a Werner von Braun.”

“The Power of Flight” was the first such television special supported by EADS. Prior to its December 14 public broadcast, CNBC produced and aired vignettes with EADS executives Ralph Crosby, Tom Enders and Airbus North America Chairman Allan McArtor to educate its viewers on the importance of the transatlantic partnership in the history and future development of aerospace.
